4 Best Lakes in Southern Utah for Paddleboarding

One of our favorite places to spend spring break is St. George, Utah. Months of cold and snow make everyone eager to get back on the water and get a dose of warm weather --perfect to enjoy some time in the sun or lounge in that desert sand. Here's a list of the best places in the St. George area for paddleboarding:

4. Ivins Reservoir

This is more pond than lake, but the lack of motorized boats make it a great option for families to do a little paddleboarding or just hanging out at the beach. The best part about this lake is that it has a great view of Snow Canyon State Park

3. Quail Creek State Park

Located in Hurricane, this lake is the closest one to St. George, making it a popular spot for families on spring break. It can be so popular during spring break that it often reaches max capacity. But for good reason! Its warm water and beautiful scenery make it a great place for families to spend a day on the lake. Just be sure to arrive early.

Money saving tip: Rent your gear off-site. There are paddleboard rentals on site for $45 for 4 hours or $70 for the day. Instead, grab a paddleboard before leaving town and keep it for the length of your trip, we are running a 50% off spring break special - inflatable paddleboards that fit in your trunk are just $14/day.

2. Gunlock State Park

30 minutes west of St. George is another state park that's popular for boating and paddleboarding called Gunlock Reservoir.

However, the water sports are more of a bonus to what I think is the main attraction - the seasonal waterfalls! Even calling them 'seasonal' is somewhat of a misnomer because sometimes they go years without appearing. But when the water levels in the spring are high enough, the reservoir overflows, creating these stunning and picturesque waterfalls over some classic red rock cliffs. Spring break is the ideal time to see the falls, then spend the rest of the day playing at the lake.

1. Sand Hollow State Park

Sand Hollow is hands down our favorite lake in the St. George area! Not only is it our favorite lake near St. George, we think it's #1 best sandy beach in Utah!

Where to stay near the lakes:

Our favorite place to stay when we visit St. George is at the Springhill Suites St. George Washington. The suites are nice and spacious, they have free breakfast, a great pool & hot tub, and it's located just seven minutes from downtown St. George and less than 20 minutes from Sand Hollow. Highly recommend it! Click the link above to book your stay.

Paddleboard Options:

  • Rent on site: The Beach at Sand Hollow: $20 per hour plus $10 for each additional hour
